This evening, the Farlow park Tot Lot in Newton Corner. MA, opened officially. The rebuilding of this playground was the result of a full community effort, from fundraising to organization to the actual building of the play structures.

The park is dedicated to the memory of Jack Kaczmarek, a little boy who, like my son, spent a lot of time playing here. The speakers at the ceremony include Amelia Zalcman, who helped lead the effort to rebuild the park (see: http://www.farlowtotlot.org/), Fran Towle, Newton, Parks & Recreation Commissioner, and Sandy Clancy, Jack’s mother.

The Newton Fire Department had a couple of trucks on hand to give tours to children, and Lizzie’s Ice Cream was there (in cow costumes! See my previous Utter) to serve up ice cream sundaes.

But best of all was seeing the dozens of kids stream into the park and start playing.

That’s what a playground is for, right?
