"Summer is always dead."

Wrong. I spent ten years in the news industry, and now 11 in public relations. Every year, people expect summer to be slow. The weather is nice, people go on vacation, etc.

And every summer we are up to our ears in work.

This is not a statement about the economy and whether or not it’s recovering. It’s a statement about how repeated rebuttal doesn’t phase our ingrained prejudices.

Just look at the dragonfly in this photo. They not only don’t bite our sting us, they eat mosquitos. People who know this still scream and run away. Poor guy.

How’s your summer? Do you expect it to be dead, only to get swamped?

  1. Hey Doug,

First I’d like to say that this is a great photo! In response to the topic of your post, I am definitely putting in more hours behind my computer but the beauty is it is more accepted within my work culture (during the summer) to put in 50+ hours in 4 days and have an extended weekend.

To your point, I work harder but play harder in the summer.

    Thoughts?

  2. Thanks re: the photo– actually took that with my 2 megapixel camera phone- testament to using the right conditions to get a good photo with a limited camera.

perhaps the fact that we try ti squeeze in more playtime in the summer makes the rest of the days seem busier, but my point is the more that the world doesn’t stop the way we expect it to. when I was in news, there would still be wars (and peace). And in PR, new clients are ready when they;re ready, and current clients still do business (how dare they?) It deifies our summer mindset.

    OK, back to work…
