Together, we are doing a small but significant part to find a cure for cancer. Please consider sponsoring me- at any amount- in the 30th annual Pan-Mass Challenge, an incredible 2-day journey through the Bay state the first weekend in August. You may donate at http://pmc.org/DH0159.

Well, here we are in June. This is the month in which both fundraising and training kick into high gear. As I write this on June 11, my training mates and I have already done two 50-milers and a number of back-to-back rides. The video below is from a 43-mile ride on May 31. You’ll notice at the end (if you make it that far) that I suddenly realize that we’re about to enter June and there’s no turning back. I also have realized that I am in pretty good shape; I am feeling better physically after each ride, but I also know that I need to put in more miles to be truly ready for the Pan-Mass Challenge come August 1.

It is also the beginning of fundraising crunch time. I have been pleasantly surprised that I have kept ahead of last year’s pace, event though my minimum is $800 more than last year. However, the pace of donations picked up quickly last year, and in order to keep pace I need to continue to ask for your help.

Currently, my generous sponsors have me just under the half-way mark: $2,005 towards my $4,200 goal. Are those of you who have yet to join ready to help? Do I dare dream of reaching the PMC’s “Heavy Hitter” status by raising $6,000?

I cannot do it without your help. As you have seen on this blog, a number of fascinating people from all parts of my life have contributed to the PMC’s fight against cancer. Every dollar I raise goes directly to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Will you please join?
Do taglines matter? They’re supposed to convey the company or product meaning in a snappy few words. But do the audiences care?

Forrester Research’s Jeremiah Owyang (http://web-strategist.com/blog) has done something fun on this topic: he set up a quiz (the quix has since been closed) inviting people to identify the companies in the social media community platforms market by their taglines.

Even though I am involved in this space and know a number of the players personally, I am embarrassed to say I only knew one tagline off the bat.

Why even admit that? Because I am beginning to wonder if taglines even matter. Perhaps Jeremiah is making the same point.

Do you think taglines are working? What makes an effective tagline? Have it your way- tell me what you think.

Note on the picture: Marvel Comics’ taglines for their titles tended to become the titles themselves: "Uncanny X-Men,"."Amazing Spiderman," etc. That’s why these taglines work.

UPDATE, July 8, 2009:

Welcome, David Weinberger friends and fans! It seems David mistakenly linked to this post in a Tweet. Please stick around and enjoy this slightly aged but still relevant post about public relations. If you want the “United Broke My Guitar Video,” please go here.

One of the occupational realities of working in the public relations world, is that our media “targets” (yes, we use that word) often write about us, mostly when they are frustrated and want to vent about how terrible we are. I’m not complaining, as we get our rewards and kudos in other ways.

Recently, there has been a rash of posts by tech bloggers that forces PR to re-examine its role in the world of social media. Not that we haven’t been doing it anyway, but I’ll bite. Here is a roundup of the posts that came to my attention:

Marshall, Kirkpatrick, ReadWriteWeb: “Does Good Tech Need PR?“

I really like Marshall’s post, and I am not surprised as he has been very friendly to and understanding of the better Pr people out there. He is very balanced, seeing the need for startups to engage PR and pointing out some of his favorite PR pros (I can live with the snub, as I have been too full of myself to be pitching Marshall lately). Most importantly, he knows the need for companies to work with PR outside of mere media and blogger relations, to craft messaging and make sure communication preparation is solid before going out the door with it. He does acknowledge the other side, but doesn’t seem to embrace it in my view.

Robert Scoble, Scobleizer: “PR-less launch kicks off a stack overflow of praise“

Scoble goes out of his way to come up with a great example of a company that got lots of blogger attention. His source, a programmer that loved the product, Stack Overflow, and recommended it to Scoble, who in turn loved it. I don’t see how that disproves the need for other companies to engage PR professionals. This seems more a calculated post by Scoble to bear out his recent attempt to go cold-turkey on PR. Withdrawal’s a bitch. I’m not going to excuse the scads of crappy pitches any blogger gets, but saying you are getting off the PR bandwagon won;t prevent you from being pitched– in fact, now you will only get pitched by the dummies who are doing it wrong. The only practical advice is not to be popular.

Michael Arrington, TechCrunch: “The PR Roadblock on the Road to Blissful Blogging”

Despite the snarky title, I liked this post as well. We don’t want to hear our PR industry is “broken,” but Arrington is very constructive in his criticism. He ends up writing a decent blueprint for young PR people to follow: read the blogs, participate in the community, go to events. Just because it’s common sense doesn’t mean it can’t be said over and over. And over.

Mark “Rizzn” Hopkins, Mashable: “The Changing Role of Public Relations“

What has changed in public relations? For one thing, we are pitching people named “Rizzn.” You won’t get that in the New York Times. I’m not just making fun of a nickname, but pointing out the informality that now exists between bloggers (and, heck, other journalists) and PR folks. This points back to relationship-building– no, not a freakin’ rolodex; how useless. I mean, treat people like humans, and as Hopkins says, give value beyond a press release and corporate messaging. Again, more common sense (a theme here so far), but old skills newly highlighted by the need to do relations with blogs and other social media.

Steve Rubel, Micropersuasion; “Does the Thrill of the Chase Make PR Obsolete?“

Ah, fear and self-loathing in PR land? This is the post, inspired by Scoble’s post above, that in turn inspired the TechCrunch and Mashable write-ups. Unfortunately, Steve can offer no better advice to us PR pros, assembled at his feet to learn, than “stop spamming.” Thanks, Steve! But what he does give is insight into the problem of any popular blogger who has to put up with the daily multitude of misdirected pitches, with the added misery that he is a part of the industry that creates the pile of cow patties he must now navigate in his email inbox. that is actually a worthwhile perspective.

WWASD (What would Allen Stern Do?); Centernetworks
Conspicuous by his absence is Allen Stern of CenterNetworks. He is usually good for a strong opinion, and trust me I know he has strong opinions on the relationship between PR and bloggers. Come on Allen, what say you? Or are you too busy writing posts about, I don’t know, technology and social networking?

I wish for bloggers– and all journalists– I could crinkle my nose like Samantha Stevens and whoosh away all the bad pitches they get every day. Alas, I can only try to tidy up my little corner of the SHIFT Communications universe, and maybe a little more. Bloggers are learning that their popularity means they get the same uneven PR service, solicited or not, that all media gets. PR pros are learning that bad PR practices beget much swifter and more public retribution than in the past. Maybe these factors will combine to make us better.

At Social Media Breakfast 8 in Cambridge, Mass. on June 24, the topic was video, and some innovative ways people are using video.
Another topic I saw coming was the divide between cheap and easy production vs. professional, expensive production. First, Jeff Glasson of Perkett PR explained that you can produce decent video using equipment costing less than $1,000. His camera is in the middle of the photo above. Video pro Larry Lawfer of YourStorys understandably took a different tack, urging people to adhere to a high standard of quality, and not just rely on cheaply-produced Fl

As readers of my blog saw recently, I am a fan of a semi-obscure rock group called The Shazam. When I wrote that earlier post, I realized I did not have one of their CDs, called “Rev9″ for their more-interesting-than-I-thought-it-would-be cover of the Beatles’ “Revolution #9.”

I was happily surprised to see that, when the CD arrived, it was autographed by Hans Rotenberry, lead singer and songwriter of the group. Very cool– unexpected. Did the Web site say they were autographed? I had no recollection, but looking back, it did say that. Why wouldn’t any independent musician– or heck, even a famous one — do that, going the extra mile for the fans for just a small amount of effort?

Anyway, this CD is going right next to my autographed copy of The Move‘s “Shazam” CD (obviously, the Move was an inspiration for the band “the Shazam). For that story– it was autographed by the singer, the late Carl Wayne. I bought it on eBay, but got a great story from the seller about working backstage at a show by the hollies, for whom Carl Wayne was singing at the time. Nice to have the story behind something like that.

I am probably more of a jazz music fan than anything else, but certain types of rock music aways get to me. I came across Nashville, Tennessee-based The Shazam several years ago when I was getting into music by The Move (the band that became Electric Light Orchestra) and saw that The Shazam were heavily influenced by The Move, ELO and Roy Wood, founder of both bands.

They have spent several years under the radar, but have a few very enjoyable albums out there, and are reportedly planning a new one shortly. Their few spotlight moments include a song on a Coors commercial (I forgive them; the song works) and inclusion on “Little” Steven Van Zandt’s “Coolest Songs in the World” CD.

Anyway– I really like this band and thought I would share this trippy video of “On the Airwaves,” a song that appears on the Little Steven CD. One of the animated characters who is supposed to be part of The Shazam actually looks a lot like Little Steven:

My thoughts on this are not completely formed, but I am throwing this out there to see what comments I get.

In today’s Sunday New York Times Arts section was a huge story on the Summer of Love– 1967 (login required). The article outlined how reenactments and celebrations will largely be of the top-down variety, in opposition to how we think of that summer.

Let’s forget for a second that the eclipsing event of 1967 was the release of the astonishing “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,”a release by one of the most experimental pop bands of our time, The Beatles– but still, a pop band on a major label. I think of the Summer of Love not only as free-wheeling Hippie culture, but of underground art bubbling to the surface of mass popular culture. This perhaps is epitomized by the Monterey Pop festival of 1967, organized by a combinations of San Francisco artists, like the members of the Mamas and the Papas, and more established Los Angeles-based music industry veterans.

Getting away from the nostalgia and events that will undoubtedly be force-fed to us by major media interests, how can the spirit of 1967 be revived? The seeds of something can be seen in the social media movement. There are several factors that can make this a possibility:

Media produced by the people, akin to underground artists and culture-mongers, gaining enough juice to sway some attention

Independent musicians and other artists, championed by many social media content producers. Think podsafe music, officially labeled so or otherwise.

A touch of big-media organization, — think Podshow, maybe. Is there established-media integration that would play into a social media eruption.

Throw in the parallel of an unpopular war if you want. The above are some ingredients to make an Internet-age Summer of Love. It does not have to be all about Peace and Love. It doesn’t even have to be in the summer, or in 2007. These are really some scattered thoughts that came out of reading one article in an MSM newspaper. I would be curious what people think of the parallels.
