Steve-- Yes, there are certain companies that face this discretion (there's a reason that Fidelity is often the poster-company for locked-down environments), but I think the point of "stop blocking" advocates is that many companies don't, or are more conservative than needed in their approach (er, quite possibly, Fidelity, again).

Justin-- you're right on my point-- and being snide is definitely part of the TechCrunch mentality, for sure.

B.L. - my pleasure. I love your lists. Any viewpoint on Steve's note, above?

doug: thanks for the shout out on my 5 reasons not to block social media post. IMO, it's a practice that's akin to cutting off the corporate nose to save its corporate face.

I think SXSW is just like college: you get out of it what you put into it.

Sure, there's always time to party, but if you attend with a purpose in mind, you'll be able to balance your socializing with your business or artistic goals. The larger problem is that so few people who utilize social media actually HAVE goals or plans, it's too easy for them to confuse socializing with work.

As for being snide toward one's own expected audience, that's all part of the "rock star" mentality, isn't it? ;)

Doug, there are two technical reasons where the social media software vendors need to help corporations. For those companies with regulatory requirements to retain all communications of certain types of employees, the vendors (one) need to provide a way to differentiate between social media accounts and (two) need to provide an easy archival mechanism for any content generated by those designated users. Until such time, all the arguments in the world won't be effective in getting some companies to incorporate public social media tools in their environment.
