David2 (LimeDuck): I don;t think it affects Loic’s standing, he has the reputational capital to spend, especially as the main face behind the Twhirl app for Twitter/etc. Interesting that as I type this he is back up to following nearly 400 people. I found that the meaningful group stream he is aiming for evaporates before you get to 300 (a “Double Dunbar”). Hence my attitude toward following.

Bigger problem is the spam followers and how to get rid of them. Auto-followers like me probably just encourage them, because we don;t care or notice. but if we don’t notice, is their spam really working?

It doesn’t seem to have had much effect on Loic’s follower count – http://twittercounter.com/loic/all – he lost some but I would have predicted more. I guess that validates his point that these “relationships” were low quality to begin with.

The real question is, what effect does this have on his actual use of Twitter and his standing in the twitunity? (twitter community)
