Last weekend, I saw the movie "Doubt," starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman as a priest who may or may not be abusing a child, and Meryl Streep as the nun/school principal who is convinced of his guilt.

While I watched the two acclaimed actors try to out-thesp each other, one bit from an early confrontation struck me; as Sister Aloysius (Streep) objected to ideas for making the annual Christmas pageant a little more fun with a secular song or two, Father Flynn sat down and began writing. What was he writing? An idea for a sermon ("Intolerance") that had come to him right then. He wanted to write it down before he forgot.

"Of course," I thought. "Father Flynn is a blogger!" It probably hadn’t struck me until now because I rarely attend church these days- but from childhood I remember the process, wondering how the pastors came up with new material each week.

Those of you who blog-or all writers- do you gather your ideas thus, writing them down as inspiration strikes?

  1. More times than not, I tweet about the initial idea for a blog post. My rationale is that later (when I have a moment) I can sit down and write from the 140 character starter thought.

As you can see from my blog, I’m writing blog posts less and less and microsharing on twitter more and more. So I have lots of starter thoughts just begging for a moment of time to become actual blog posts.

Why did “I’m Just A Bill” from School House Rock pop just into my head? ;->

  2. I need to be more diligent about writing down my ideas “as they happen”. Not to brag, but I’ve solved some pretty major problems while jogging around the neighborhood, sitting in the school pick-up line, and waiting for my daughter’s cheerleading team to perform their halftime routine (yes, that’s a l-o-n-g time to be waiting). The only thing is this: I’ve forgotten to write them down.
