Morning Commute Utterz: Name Your Personal Brand
April 9, 2008 – 8:08 am
I have been noticing a trend toward using real, full names for personal brands, like Bryper moving to Bryan Person. makes sense, but I am wondering what triggered this.

I’ve noticed that too! I mentioned it on Twitter yesterday, at least 3 of my Twitter friends have gone from some nickname to the firstname-lastname angle. I think they are just copying us. ;)

Well, copying ME anyway, since you actually dont’ do that. But you shouldn’t ever give up “dough,” it’s too funny. Hehe.

Guys, the reason for my switch was simple: “Bryper” began to feel too insiderish to me over time. It worked for the crowd I was running with, but not so well with newcomers.
As I’m looking to reach out to people and companies who may just be getting their feet wet with social media, giving out my blog URL of BryanPerson.com just feels a lot more comfortable.
Curious to see what others have to say.

SaWu makes a good point – a lot of folks are doing this for the sake of easy recall. I was toying with the idea of doing the reverse and going with ScoMon, but figured it would be too troublesome to change all of my accounts.

Could this switch be a sign of transparency? We are reverting back to a time when your reputation is more important than annonyminit.

It’s the new transparency movement. I blame Jermemiah Owyang and the whole social media ethics movement. It’s the new cool thing. You would think I’m lying, but LizWebPage is not only my brand, but my name: I’m Liz Page, Web Professional. (sounds vaguely superhero-ish or double-07-like, right?)
On a serious note, do the companies I work for necessarily want to be associated with my off-hours antics? There is no longer any line between on- and off-the-clock. I think it’s a dilemma!

I think it’s a feeling of why not? And as online networks overlap real ones, using a real name makes more sense.
